Down with the sickness?

Is it just me, or has this been the worst year for health in the classroom? I have not felt well since school started on August 24th. I've had a persistent cough, alternating runny/stuffy nose, watery eyes, and a general head fog. Yet I don't think I have a cold or flu or ebola -- I think it's just allergies from my really really awful classroom.

Of course, it's not that true sickness is not going around, so I could be mistaken. 3 of my homeroom kids were out sick yesterday, along with one girl from my afternoon class. Plus one boy who has been IN class for the past two days, but making loud retching sounds before I finally convinced him to go to the bathroom if he was going to throw up.

I had to stop my whole morning class yesterday and do guided practice on how to cough and sneeze into the crook of your elbow, and NOT into the general air supply, as had been the norm.

Here in Dallas, there are people dying from Swine Flu, regular flu, AND West Nile Virus!! I just want to survive the school year!!

We've been back to school 8 days and I've not a perfect attendance yet. On the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth days of school I sent a different child home sick. Rather frustrating that I've not yet had everyone there a whole day - they're missing all that beginning of the year stuff. AND if they're going to be stick then they should stay home and not come in at all. I shouldn't have to lysol everything so soon!! I've the sneezes and head ache today - on a Saturday when I'd like to be doing home stuff.

I've had over 20% of my students out over the course of the past week - and they're out for 5 days at a stretch between the flu and strep. So far I've been healthy (just tired, but I'm always tired) and I get my flu shot on Monday so hopefully I won't be out for the count.

I started to feel the cold symptoms last night! ugg! I had 3 different students out this week. I don't even want to know what is to come!

maybe you're allergic to school...I'm just sayin'. Also, here is a tremendously awesome video about sneezing. Your kids won't get all the jokes, but it is stinking hilarious.

I work in DISD, too, and you're right! It's horrible! My students knocked me out with flu by the second week of school. I keep getting notes every day from parents telling me that Chiquito is sneezing/coughing a lot and asking me to keep an eye on them and call if they get worse. Oh, goodie! Our principal sends weekly reminders about NOT sending kids to school when they are sick.

I also have already been sick, and had a lot of kids out sick already. I saw this coming though, I was director for a summer camp in July, and a third of our students got sick enough that they had to be sent home. I understand a number of camps around the country actually had to close because of illness. I think this cold and flu season is likely to be bad like we have just not seen before.

Could be the "Chem-trails".

I thought the chem-trails were supposed to keep us docile, not sick! hehe

Today was the worst, I had 4 kids out of my homeroom and 6 out of my second class!

Carol, I did wipe the desks down with the Clorox wipes today!
