Just a regular school day

It's a little after 7am as I write this. I'm looking out the window, where the snow is coming down somewhat intensely, and the ground is covered in white.

Yet school is open today, just like any other day.

Thank you, DISD.

I'm sitting in class, too, Mr. Teacher. Just like I tell the kids- we cancel school for ice, not snow. Nobody's goin' tomorrow. FOUR DAY WEEKEND!

Living in Minnesota I really can't feel very bad for you, we have had about a foot of snow on the ground for the past three months and it isn't leaving any time soon.

We had a snow day on Wednesday - and only ended up getting about half an inch of snow! We didn't need the mental break as we're off school next week anyway and now we have to finish one day later in June :-(

Ms. Nelson? FOUR day weekend? Yes, school has been cancelled for tomorrow, but do you have Monday off too?

Anon, I know it's different up there. But then, you probably don't deal with 109 degree days in June and August...

Almost, school HAS been cancelled for us tomorrow and with good cause. There is 3-4 inches on the ground here currently, and more is expected!

We have the craziest snow days--a couple of weeks ago, we had a snow day because it was SUPPOSED to snow, and yesterday we got out three hours early for tiny little snow particles--not even laying on the roads. But, it did turn out to be a good thing. My district is where the 4th grade teacher shot the principal and assistant principal at one of our elementary schools--you may have seen it on the news. Thank heavens, only two children were left in the building when he did it. It has been a sad and very disturbing day--how do you explain madness to little children?

NPR this morning said Dallas has 9" of snow? Wow! Enjoy! Here in northern New England we have none! (none=less than an inch on the ground in most places right now.)

TN, this just happened yesterday? No, I hadn't heard anything about it. A teacher shot your principal and AP? Wow, what exactly happened, and where were you?

The shooting was on Wednesday. It was at a small elementary school about 5 miles from mine. The teacher (4th grade) had just learned in a meeting with both administrators that his contract would not be renewed for the next school year. He went to his car, got his gun (for which he did not have a permit), went back into the office and shot both of them. The assistant's head was grazed--40 staples to scalp, and her hand was hit. The principal was shot 3 times in the back. She has been in critical condition until today, when she moved up to serious, but still in ICU. The man was arrested about 15 minutes after leaving the school. He is 48, and is known to be an odd, grouchy, hermit-type individual. More and more is coming out about him--oops, maybe he shouldn't have been hired in the first place? It's always awful to have any type of school violence, but it is especially disturbing that it came from within the school family. I worry about his students--they are going to need a lot of love and support.
