Time for an update

Wow, I just noticed today that I haven't written a post in over a week. Silly me, getting caught up in other things. :)

Here are a few things that have been happening...

- I got strep throat last weekend and was out last Monday.

- We "grew" butterflies in the classroom. Started with caterpillars, saw chrysali one day, and then out popped butterflies. They're at a point now where they need to be released into the wild.

- TAKS test is a week from tomorrow. This week is all review, then it's time to let go of their hands and see if they walk out in front of the bus.

- We apparently don't have to wear ties at work anymore.

- Someone thought it would be funny to put a bottle of glue under one of the bus tires. When it got crushed, it sprayed glue all over me and 2 other teachers, but mostly me.

- Our new air conditioning comes on whenever I am NOT in the room and turns off when class IS in session.

- I haven't worn a tie to school all year.

- The class next door to me got a new kid today -- 10 years old -- who has already started calling his female classmates "The L Word."

And now you're up to date! Go forth and multiply!

Missed you! Our very important test was last week. My third graders really did work hard--from what I'm told. Enjoy review week!

HAH! Laughed out loud over that glue incident! Genius...although I'm sure it is less funny when you aren't trying to figure out how to get Elmer's out of you're clothes...

Teacher from TN, when do you find the results! My fingers are crossed for you!

Miss Teacher, you're right -- I didn't think it was so very genius...

In TN, there have been so many changes due to "Race to the Top" (federal grant) money. Traditionally, the scores come in over the summer, and the data crunchers have all the info for us when school starts. Next year, though, the kids' final grades will be impacted by up to 25% by their test scores! I'm not exactly sure how that will work.....

Did you have any particular rationale behind your reason for no longer wearing a tie to work?

Alex, a rationale behind the principal's announcement, or a rationale behind me personally not wearing a tie all year?

Your personal decision. I haven't come across any principals around here who require ties on the male teachers.

In the past, it's been Dallas district dress code. Around October 1st, we get an email from the district saying summer dress code is over, men must wear ties, women must wear hose. This year, we never got that email. So we haven't been wearing ties. Monday, our principal announced that we didn't have to wear ties anymore. Guess she's been too busy to notice that we haven't been wearing them.

Ah, I see. In the districts I work in around East Central Illinois (I am a substitute teacher), very few men wear ties - even among the administrations. So I wear a tie every day to distinguish myself.
