Once again, I find myself nervous, anxious, unconfident, and worried about the first day of school. I most likely won't sleep well tonight, and tomorrow will be exhausting. I am pretty sure that my room is as ready as it is going to be, that my lesson plans are sound, that the routines I plan on going over are solid. I think of myself as being a good teacher, but a new group of kids always makes me wonder if they are going to respond to me as well as other groups have.
Anybody else go through this on the night before the first day?

Every single year...and this is my 18th year of teaching. I always wonder if the things I did last year will work this year or did I do enough last year. I think I've gone over my lesson for tomorrow about a hundred times today and I still dont know if it's okay or not. I wish tomorrow would just come already so I can be done with the "first day" jitters.
This is my 13th year, and there was still some anxiety before the first day (tomorrow is day 9), but I think that's a good thing...it shows you still care about what you are doing...I'm reminded of the famous NFL quarterback who would throw up before every game...I'm sure you will be much calmer than that!
Oh, only every single year!
Ditto. This is m 6th year, and each year the night before the 1st day is the same. Good luck!
The first day is always so awkward. For me, it takes about 2 weeks to get back into the groove and routine. Fortunately, the kids don't know that I threw the lesson plan out the window after the first 5 minutes.
You'll do great!
i have teacher nightmares... usually something about lesson planning or being unprepared.... I usually dream about having no classroom at least once. and about being nervous? another teacher told me one time that if you aren't nervous on the first day of school, it's probably time to get out of teaching. =)i don't know if that's true or not, but there it is.
So Ben, it's cool if I throw up every day before school? ;)
I've been terrified - but so far it's working out super well! I totally heart my kids and they are responding well to the minor discipline stuff I have had to do so far...so right now, I'm feeling quite pleased.
Yes, every year - for the last 20!
Every year, and this is my 9th year in the classroom. Actually I slept surprisingly well last night but I figure that is mostly because today is an "A Block" day, and the 6th graders have orientation, so, really I only have two classes.
But, yes, I spend a lot of time going over every single aspect of the first day in my head, in advance, and it takes me about two weeks to really get back into the groove.
